US Jewish Community Shows Little Enthusiasm

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrapped up a highly successful summit on Wednesday afternoon with US President Donald Trump. “I’ve known the President and I’ve known his family and his team for a long time, and there is no greater supporter of the Jewish people and the Jewish state than President Donald Trump. I think we should put that to rest,” Netanyahu said at a joint press conference at the White House.

A White House statement accompanying the meeting added optimistically that a “new day” had dawned in Israel-US relations.

There were clouds over the meeting however, including the relative silence about it from many American Jewish organizations which are traditionally enthusiastic about visits to Washington by Israeli leaders but who represent a demographic group which overwhelmingly voted against Trump in the recent election and from which there has been, in recent years, an increasingly wide gap between American and Israeli Jews regarding a wide range of issues.
