ICEJ Supports Pro-Life Project in Israel

In the heart of Israel, where ancient stories echo through modern challenges, a project named after a biblical legend is quietly transforming lives. Much like the story of baby Moses, rescued from the river’s edge, the Moses Basket Project has become a lifeline for courageous mothers who defy the odds and choose life, with help from the ICEJ.
In a nation where nearly 20,000 sanctioned abortions occur annually, and thousands more take place illicitly, the Moses Basket Project stands as a beacon of hope. This project not only provides practical assistance but also symbolizes a steadfast commitment to preserving life in the face of challenging circumstances.
Under Israeli law, abortion is permissible under specific conditions: if the woman is under 17 or over 40, if the pregnancy is the result of unwed conception, if there is a potential physical or mental defect in the fetus, or if continuing the pregnancy poses risks to the woman’s health. This reflects the view of Rabbinic Judaism, which takes a less strict approach to abortion than many pro-life Christians, yet broadly objects to abortion in cases without serious cause. Surprisingly, Israel remains one of the few countries where abortion is legal up until birth.
This complex legal landscape underscores the vital importance of initiatives like the Moses Basket Project. It represents a compassionate response to the multifaceted challenges these women face, providing them with the necessary tools and community support to make informed decisions and raise their children with dignity and strength.
Currently, the Christian Embassy is sponsoring nine ‘Moses Basket’ mothers who chose to have their babies, supplying them with essentials such as clothing, baby equipment, and formula for an entire year. This support not only meets immediate needs but also fosters a nurturing environment where mothers can focus on bonding with their babies and building a stable foundation for their future.
The stories of Chen, Kebra, and Hodaya exemplify the profound impact this support has on families navigating parenthood under exceptionally difficult circumstances.
Baby Opal’s first birthday was celebrated with balloons, cake, and laughter in Eilat, a city struggling with economic challenges due to the war and the ensuing collapse of tourism. Despite these hardships, Chen remains resilient and hopeful, thanks to the monthly gift cards she receives which provide essentials like diapers, baby wipes, and formula.
“I don’t know how I would have managed without this support,” Chen shares, her voice filled with gratitude and relief.
Kebra’s journey from Eritrea to Israel has been marked by heartache and struggle. After losing one of her four children shortly after birth and being separated from her three surviving children in Eritrea, Kebra’s life in Israel is a daily struggle. Her husband’s job loss due to economic turmoil adds to their financial difficulties. Yet, Kebra’s determination remains unshaken. The monthly vouchers they receive have been a lifeline for them, enabling them to provide for Moriel, the newest addition to the family.
“These vouchers have been a huge help,” Kebra shares with a smile. “I can buy diapers, baby wipes, and formula. Without this support, I don’t know how we would have managed.”
Despite her husband’s house arrest and the ensuing financial strain, Hodaya’s story is one of resilience. Baby Milan’s first year has been filled with joy, her cheerfulness a testament to Hodaya’s amazing gift as a mother. The monthly aid she receives via ICEJ serves as a lifeline, enabling Hodaya to meet Milan’s needs without added financial burden. Her optimism for their family’s future remains strong, fueled by the support she enjoys amidst their trials.
The stories of Chen, Kebra, and Hodaya highlight the transformative power of community support in times of crisis. The assistance provided goes beyond mere financial help, as it also offers hope, plus communal and emotional support. Not only can these mothers provide for their children’s basic needs, but they also now have the strength to face their daily challenges with courage and determination.
“Thank you for enabling my child to be like every other child and have everything that they need,” one mother said to us.
“We at the ICEJ are honored to sponsor these families,” assured Nicole Yoder, Vice President for Aid & Aliyah. “Often, knowing that this support is on the way, helps families make the crucial decision to ‘choose life’. What a great joy it is for us to know that these children are growing and flourishing as a result. We celebrate together this year of hope, resilience, and life.”
May we all do more to affirm life (John 10:10). Please continue to support the ICEJ as we work to bless and uplift the people of Israel through efforts that offer a future and hope to those who need it most.
